Essay: A visit to a historical place

In the last summer vacation I got an opportunity to visit Delhi, the capital of India. It is a city of great historical importance of its own.

The word 'Delhi literally means 'a sill of the house.' In ancient times it was called 'Kurukshetra.' The history of Pandavas and Kauravas is woven around it. Since then this city has seen many ups and downs. The Shakas and Hunas came to India and settled in areas around this city. Then came the Moghuls and made Delhi the capital of their kingdom. Then came the British and ruled over India. Ages after ages arrived and passed; great kings arose and fell, Delhi in all its majesty stands as the witness of the glorious past.

In old Delhi there are many historical places. There is the famous Red Fort. We visited it. Then we visited the Royal Court, Diwan-l-am and Diwan-l-Khas. These are Moghul monuments. Moghuls have kept a deep impression on the history of India in the form of beautiful sculptures and pieces of architecture. They speak of their love for art and luxury. These monuments exhibit the sense of beauty the Moghul had.

Next day we visited the Qutub Minar ten miles away towards Si.N4th Delhi. It is one of the beautiful and perfect towers in the world. It has a blend of pink, red arid orange stone and many artistic carvings. It is a gem of architecture I liked it very much.

Then we went to see the 'Iron Pillar and the Jumma Masjid. The biggest of all masjids in India. We visited jantar-mantar an old astrological lab.

The whole city of old Delhi bears the marks of India's glorious history. It is now the capital of independent India. After independence d is developing fast and undergoing a rapid change. 'New Delhi' is a new settlement which bears marks of wealth and luxury. In New Delhi there are stately Parliament Houses, the President's house, the Secretariat, the National Musium. They are built in the western style. The roads are broad and clean. There are big parks and markets found Delhi to be a confluence of the East and the West.

I am lucky to visit Delhi, a place having a long tradition of historical, cultural, political and artistic heritage.
