Essay: A Visit to a Movie/Cinema or the Cinema I Saw

The examinations were recently over. We wanted to relax and recreate ourselves after the strenuous hard work for the examinations. So the group of my friends planned to see a movie.

The 'Bombay' directed my Mani Ratnam was running at Rahul Theatre. We had read articles about it in the newspapers. It increased our craze to see 'Bombay'. We paid a visit to Rahul.

People had crowded at the current booking window to get the tickets. We had purchased them in advance. So we entered the cinema hall. It was full to its capacity. The colourful advertisements were shown. After the display of newsreel the film started.

We watched the movie carefully. It was a love story of a small family, the hero, the heroin and their two children. The hero comes from the Hindu family and the heroin from the Muslim family. It was shown to happen on the background riots among Hindus and Muslims which took place in Mumbai in 1993. The mad crowd sets their house on fire. In a gas-cylinder blast the couple losses their parents. The children of the couple Shekhar and Shaila Banu get loci. In the confused crowd. They all depart from each other; face suffering and agony. At the end the children are found and the family reunites.

What we appreciated the most was the acting of the heroin as a lover and the mother and the acting of the hero. Their roles were played by Manisha Koirala and Aravinda Swami. We were impressed by the beautiful and effective photography. MR beauty and sublimity of nature was very suggestively depicted through it. The gloom and drear after the riots, the suffering of the families depicted with minute details really moved us. The movie is a comedy having a tragic intertone. The songs and the music are also ill tune with the mood of the movie.

The capable director Mani Ratnarn has handled the subject nicely. I thought that through this movie he wants to impress the message on the sensitive minds of the young generation to give up the differences like a Hindu, a Muslim. Think ourselves as Indian's and struggle to keep our unity and integrity. Be brothers and bring your hands together.

Cinema today is not merely a means of amusement. It is an important means of establishing communication with the .mass at one time. The directors like Mani Ratnam keep this in front of them. That's why the movies like 'Bombay' become a source not only of amusement but also of instruction. Our visit to this movie was a step forward in our appreciation of cinema.
