Essay: Diwali


'Diwali or 'Deepawali' is the greatest of the Hindu Festivals. People of all religions and castes in India enjoy its celebration as their own festival.

Diwali festival has a great religious importance. It is celebrated for years together as a memory of Shri Rama's return from exile. It comes on the last no-moon day of the month Ashwin. When Diwali knocks at the door, the women clean and wash their houses. They start preparation of variety of Diwali sweetmeats. People buy new clothes for the family members to wear on this festive occasion. Children enjoy their Diwali vacation looking forward to Diwali. People send greetings to distant relatives and friends. Everybody is ready to welcome Diwali.

And there comes Diwali glittering with brightness. It is a 'Festival Lights' as its name suggests. People burn oil-lanterns outside the house. They hang sky-lanterns. The women draw colourful Rangoli designs in front of the door. They prepare sweets and Exchange them with relatives and neighbours. Children build soil forts and burst ample of crackers and leap up with joy. Thu market is also lit up with glowing lights.

In Deepawali Laxmi, the goddess of wealth, is worshipped New account-books are worshipped and opened. People worship the Goddes Laxmi to give them prosperity in the year to come There is a special day for Brothers and sisters', which is called 'Bhaubeef. It fastens more the bond of love between them. Deepawali is celebrated for four days. Each day has some episode behind it. Each day is celebrated with great festivity. People go to each other's house to greet eachother. Mutual relations of love and friendship are re-established. People forget enmity and forgive eachother with a deep embrace. Thus is the Diwali a festival of mirth and laughter. It kindles light in every home and delight in every heart
