Essay: Our School Peon

Can we think of any educational institute where there is no peon? Likewise, one cannot think of Adarsha Vidya Mandir High school, without thinking about Kisan Pane. Whenever anybody miters the school he finds Kisan sitting on a stool at the door of the office of the Headmaster. He is well above fifty. He is tall and has a strong built.

He always wears a clean khaki uniform with a brass name plate pinned to its pocket and wears a white Gandhi cap on his head.

Since last thirty years Kisan has been working in this school. At the beginning he used to clean the class-rooms and the playground. He used to carry the notices to the classrooms. He worked the office and helped the clerks in finding office files and keeping them neatly at proper place. He used to tie and carry exam-papers to the teachers. Every work of Kisan is clean and in time.

Two months ago ha was promoted to the post of the head peon. He comes to school an hour before the school starts. He opens the locked classrooms with the keys which he always keeps with himself. Then he asks the other peons to sweep them and arrange the benches properly. He supervises them because he is now the head-peon and senior to them. At time he goes to attend the Headmaster's office. He sweeps it clean and arranges the files and papers neatly. He then fills the water jar. His first duty is to attend the Principal and to ring the school-bell before the school starts, before and after each period and after the school is over.

So he has to be very watchful to the time. Due to Kisan's honesty, he is a very trustworthy peon among, others. So everybody trusts him. Many times the Headmaster asks him to go to the bank and credit or withdraw big cash. Once unknowingly a purse with a big amount dropped from the pocket of one parent. Kisan found it. From the identity card in that purse he found the address and returned the purse immediately.

Kisan is very dutiful and obedient to the teachers and strict to the students. He doesn't like students misbehaving and breaking the rules of the school. He keeps watch on the students. So afraid of going against the rules. But at times he is very loving and helpful to students. If someone is wounded on playground Kisan immediately applies ointment on the wound. Once raghu caught fever in the school. Kisan immediately carried a nearby doctor, took medicine at his own expense and then carried Raghu home in a rickshaw. Kisan took not a single in return. Kisan has won the love and respect of the students.

When the school is over we see Kisan sitting on a 'charpai' his house in the school campus. It is a small room where he stays from the time he joined the school. Kisan gets a small salary, but he must be happy with that because we always find a merry and cheerful mood. His dutifulness and ever smiling face tell us that he is happy with his job.

My school and Kisan Rene have become one. For last so years he has been paying his service to it. So we can think how much Adarsha Vidya Mandir will miss Kisan when he retires.
